Leveraging Carpentries To Build a Community of Instruction

Session Information

The University of Oklahoma has been a member of the Carpentries Foundation for 4 years managed by the University Libraries (UL) . This allowed the UL|to offer g the Software and Data workshop curriculums each semester to help faculty, students, and staff with computing skills to help make their workflows more productive with less frustration. However, the two day format of a Carpentries workshop is difficult or not necessary for all learners. Many learners and potential learners asked if individual workshops on the various lessons could also being offered. These queries as well as other topics not covered by the Carpentries started a discussion of how to build a series of workshops around individual Carpentries lessons and including workshops on LaTeX, Open Science Framework, and DMPTool. Recognizing that many individuals are just learning the computing skills needed , the UL included the Survival Skills 101 series covering as an introduction to skills involving research data management, backups, visualizations, and tidy data. This presentation will present how the ideals and pedagogies of the Carpentries help shape the workshop series now being offered to all three OU campuses and what are the plans for developing and improving materials for future workshops.
